I Learned Something

Two GoobersWhen the remains of Hurricane Ike came through, the shingles over our back porch were peeled up. Today, my friend, Darrin, and I learned how to reshingle a roof. It didn't turn out to be nearly as hard as we thought it would be, and only took us about three hours of actual roofing work to cover about 230 sq ft. Many thanks to Darrin for helping get things set right.

So Tom, when are you coming down to help me with the roof on my back porch? It lost about 10-20% of the shingles, and needs some reroofing.

Lemme talk to the missus :) Maybe I should talk to Darrin, too....

Wow, that's ambitious of you! Jay was on the roof for a couple of hours recently getting all the sticks off after Ike. Our roof is flat. It was weird hearing him walk around up there. But atleast when I heard him walking, I knew he hadn't fallen off! :)

No problem with the help Tom. I was glad to do it. :-)

I think I will send this to Jason as inspiration. Project Azem reroofing is taking place in two weeks. All three layers must come off before the new can go down. Want to come and help?

Not ambitious, really. I just figured that it couldn't really be all that hard, and I really didn't want to spend a large chunk of change having someone else do something that I was probably very capable of doing (with the previously mentioned help). All in all, it cost less than $200 and several hours of my time (and Darrin's of course). Now, there were some shortcuts I could take, for example, I didn't have to lay any tar paper and I didn't have any tricky corners or anything, and the roof itself is pretty small (under 250 sq ft), so your mileage may vary :)

Unfortunately, traveling to Chicago is out of range at this point (less than 2 months until B2 arrives, yikes!), but I'll point you to the web site where I found my information, http://www.doityourself.com/stry/h2shingle. Sounds like your project is more involved than mine, though. Good luck to both you and Jason!
