Last Weekend...

Late update as I've been pretty busy lately, but we wanted to mention the fun we had last weekend. We stayed with friends Mike and Laura, and their three adorable kids Saturday night. Saturday afternoon, Mike, another friend, Bill and I went to a local wine festival and had lots of good wines (patience Xabu and Piglet, I'll send you a list of the wines I tried). In the evening, Mike, Laura, Bill, Amy and I played board games till the wee hours. Sunday, we hiked in a nearby nature preserve and did a little caching before heading home. All in all, it was a very fun weekend. Thanks, Mike and Laura, for hosting us and letting us play with your kids.

Sounds like you had fun. I bet it's nice to get out again and not have to wear snowshoes! I am looking forward to Amy's April cross-stitch.

Thanks for coming down, gang. We had a blast, except for Tom and I getting spanked on Facts in Five. (Trivia is apparently not our strong suit.)

Note to self: do not play against Amy in Facts in Five. ;-)

Now, we need to have you guys come down again in the next several months for some rematches.

I think my winning was completely "beginners luck". It was also nice of everyone not to pick categories like names of rocks or 17th century French scientists. Can't wait for the rematch!

Yeah, who knew that Amy is such the trivia buff? I'll have to lean on her more heavily when playing NTN...

And ++ to rematches soon!

Okay, Tom, have you picked up any of the wines you sampled? I haven't yet, but I've got designs on Pizza Vino for the next time I make homemade pizzas.

Which Pizza Vino did you taste? I loved the Pinot Noir, but the Cabernet Sauvignon was not impressive to me. I have not yet found the Pinot Grigio. Did you meet the creator? I have talked with him at a local spot here in Akron.

You know, I can't remember if we actually met the winemaker or not.

We had the Cab, Pinot Grigio and the Pinot Noir. I found them all pretty good for the price, and the Cab was definitely on the more tannic side to complement tomato sauces. The Pinots were better than the Cab, though.

I think the best surprise of the Fest was the Mad Housewife White Zin of all things. White Zin has pretty much devolved into overly sweet stuff that just doesn't taste balanced (unlike the American and French American hybrids, which is how they are meant to taste), but Mad Housewife made a white zin that is balanced and is easily the best white zin that I've had in a long time.

Oh, and the Mad Housewife Chardonnay was good too.

Hmmm. I *think* we met the wine maker for the Pizza Vino. If I recall correctly, he was there with a couple of marketing types pitching both Pizza Vino and another label (which I can't remember offhand).

Also, IIRC, I think I liked the Cab better than the Pino, although my opinion could change if I tried them both with pizza. I do recall that Pizza Vino didn't impress me all that much.

I agree that the Mad Housewife White Zin was a great find, and the wine maker was fun to talk to. I'm hoping to find it locally to bring home. Something else I was surprised I liked were the Menage a Trois table wines. I was surprised because I had tried them previously and been underwhelmed. I might have to try them again.

More about wines later, now that I've found the booklet from the wine festival...

Tom--

Guess what I found at the local Kroger? Seven Deadly Zins.

And our Kroger isn't known for being a bastion of taste.

I've found the 7 Deadly Zins before over the last several years. It's the newer ones I've had trouble finding. But, I did grab a few today (as I'll write about shortly).
